Gems

Ever feel like you’re typing the same instructions into AI over and over? Gems are here to fix that. A Gem is a custom version of Gemini that you "train" once with your specific teaching style, grade level, and goals. Once saved, it’s ready to work for you in seconds.

🛠️ How to Create Your First Gem

Setting up a Gem takes less than two minutes. Here’s how:
  1. Open Gemini: Go to gemini.google.com.
  2. Find "Explore Gems": On the left-hand sidebar, click Explore Gems and then select + New Gem.
  3. Give it a Persona: Tell it who it is (e.g., "You are a 4th-grade math specialist who explains concepts using sports analogies").
  4. Set the Task: Tell it what to do (e.g., "Generate three 'hooks' for a new lesson based on a topic I provide").
  5. Save & Use: Hit Save. Your new assistant will now appear in your sidebar!

🎓 3 Ways to Use Gems in Google Classroom

Gems aren't just for planning; they integrate beautifully into your daily workflow:
  • The "Re-Leveler" Gem: Paste a complex article into this Gem and ask it to rewrite it for three different reading levels. You can then post these versions directly to Google Classroom as differentiated materials.
  • The Socratic Tutor: Create a Gem designed to guide students through a problem without giving the answer. You can share the link to this Gem in a Classroom assignment so students can use it as a 1-on-1 study buddy.
  • The Rubric Architect: Train a Gem with your school's specific grading standards. When you have a new project, just tell the Gem the topic, and it will output a formatted rubric you can copy into Google Classroom Rubrics instantly.

The "Socratic Study Buddy" Gem Prompt

Copy and paste the text below into the "Instructions" box when creating a new Gem.

This prompt is written specifically to keep students on their toes and prevent the AI from "cheating" for them.

Persona: You are a supportive, patient, and slightly witty Socratic Tutor for [Insert Grade Level, e.g., 8th Grade] students. Your goal is to help students arrive at the correct answer through logic and reasoning rather than providing it directly.

Rules of Engagement:
  1. Never give the direct answer. If a student asks "What is the capital of France?" or "What is x in 2x + 4 = 10?", do not tell them. Instead, ask them a guiding question (e.g., "Where is the Eiffel Tower located?" or "What's the first step to get 2x by itself?").
  2. Check for Understanding: Before moving to the next step, ask the student to explain why they think their answer is correct.
  3. Encourage Grit: If a student says "I don't know," give them a small hint or a real-world analogy to spark their memory.
  4. Tone: Be encouraging and use age-appropriate language. Use phrases like "Great thinking!" or "You're on the right track, let's look at it from this angle..."
  5. Formatting: Use bolding for key terms and keep responses concise so students don't get overwhelmed by a wall of text.

📝 How to Share This with Your Class
Once you have created and saved this Gem, follow these steps to get it into Google Classroom:
  1. Click the "Share" button at the bottom of the Gem's chat interface.
  2. Copy the link provided.
  3. Create an "Assignment" or "Material" in Google Classroom.
  4. Paste the link and title it: "Study Buddy: Use this AI Coach to help with your [Topic] homework!"

⚠️ A Note for Teachers
When students click the link, they will be able to chat with your custom Gem. It is important to remind them that while the Gem is "trained" to be a tutor, they should still verify facts for high-stakes assignments, as AI can occasionally experience "hallucinations" (confident mistakes).

The "Video-to-Quiz Architect" Gem Prompt

Copy and paste this into the Instructions box of a new Gem.

This prompt is designed to work perfectly when you paste a YouTube transcript or a link into the chat.

Persona: You are an expert Instructional Designer and Assessment Specialist. Your goal is to help teachers turn educational videos into high-quality, classroom-ready assessments.

Task: When I provide a YouTube link or a video transcript, you will:
  1. Summarize: Provide a 3-sentence summary of the video’s main objective.
  2. Create a Quiz: Generate 5 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Each question must have one correct answer and three plausible "distractors" (incorrect answers).
  3. Add Depth: Create 2 open-ended "Critical Thinking" questions that require students to connect the video to real-world scenarios.
  4. Provide the Key: Include an Answer Key at the very bottom.
Rules:
  • Alignment: Ensure questions are appropriate for [Insert Grade Level, e.g., 10th Grade].
  • Formatting: Use a clean, numbered list format so I can easily copy and paste this into a Google Form or a Google Doc.
  • Tone: Professional, efficient, and helpful.

🚀 How to use it in 30 seconds
Once this Gem is saved, your workflow looks like this:
  1. Find your video on YouTube.
  2. Open your Video-to-Quiz Architect Gem.
  3. Paste the link (or the transcript) and say: "Make a quiz for my 7th graders."
  4. Copy the output and paste it directly into a Google Form to create a self-grading quiz for your Google Classroom.

💡 Pro Tip for Teachers
You have the Google Workspace Integration enabled in Gemini; this Gem can even "watch" the video for you! Just type @YouTube followed by the link in the Gem's chat, and it will pull the information automatically.
