💡 What is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM allows educators/students to upload Docs, PDFs, or even YouTube links. The AI then becomes an expert on that specific content, helping students:
  • Summarize complex readings.
  • Generate study guides or FAQs based on class materials.
  • Cite Sources: Every answer includes citations directly from the uploaded documents to prevent "hallucinations."

NotebookLM Studio Suite

The Studio (found in the right-hand panel) instantly turns your uploaded documents into study materials. Here’s how to use each tool:

  • 🎬 Cinematic Video: Creates a narrated, visual video summary of your sources.
  • Why use it? It’s the perfect "hook" to introduce a new topic to visual learners.

  • 🎙️ Audio Overview: Generates a "Deep Dive" podcast-style conversation between two AI hosts.
  • Why use it? Students can "listen" to their reading assignments on the go.

  • 📊 Interactive Slides: Converts your sources into a structured presentation deck.
  • Why use it? It instantly builds a visual foundation for your lessons, saving you hours on formatting and outlining.

  • 📝 Study Guide: Instantly builds an outline, key terms list, and summary.
  • Why use it? Great for creating structured templates or guided notes for class.

  • ❓ Adaptive Quiz: Generates 10-15 questions based only on your uploaded files.
  • Why use it? No-prep assessment! Students can self-test and see exactly where the answer is in the text.

  • 🗂️ Flashcards: Creates digital cards for active recall.
  • Why use it? Helps students master specific terminology from your slides or PDFs.

  • 📊 Infographics: Turns data or timelines into a visual chart.
  • Why use it? Helps students see the "big picture" of complex history or science processes.

The Teacher Pro-Tip: Because everything in the Studio is grounded in the specific files you provide via Google Classroom, students stay focused on your curriculum, not random internet facts.

🛠️ How to Use it with Google Classroom

1. Create or Attach a Notebook
  1. In Google Classroom, go to Classwork > Create and select NotebookLM (or attach it within an Assignment/Material).
  2. To use an existing one: Click Select existing, choose your notebook, and hit Attach.
  3. To create new: Click Create new. You can select Choose class content to automatically import classroom files as sources.
  4. Edit: A new tab will open in NotebookLM for you to add sources or generate an Audio Overview.
  5. Finalize: Return to the Classroom tab to post the assignment.
2. Management & Student Access
  • Automatic Sync: Any edits made in NotebookLM automatically update for all classes using that notebook.
  • Permissions: Students get read-only access to sources. They can use the AI chat and view your generated guides, but they cannot add sources or create their own "studio items" (like Audio Overviews).
  • Revoking Access: Deleting the Classroom post does not remove student access in NotebookLM. You must remove them via the notebook's internal sharing settings.
  • Tracking: Use the Opened by button on the Classwork page to see which students have accessed the material.

🛡️ Safe and Secure

As part of our Gemini for Education rollout, NotebookLM features enterprise-grade data protection. This means:
  • Student data is not used to train Google’s public AI models.
  • The environment is private and restricted to the sources provided.
